Alectra Utilities Payment Assistance Programs
In Ontario, there are low-income electricity assistance programs that can help eligible students reduce their bills or address past-due balances. At Alectra Utilities we can assist you in accessing these resources:
Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP):
Whether you rent or own your home, if you are struggling to pay your electricity bills, you may qualify for financial assistance to help pay your bills.
Upon approval, a credit of up to $650 is added directly to your account to offset arrears ($780 for customers with electrically heated homes).
One-time emergency financial assistance to help pay electricity arrears or prevent disconnection. Please contact:
Brampton: United Way Simcoe Muskoka: 855-487-5327
Mississauga: Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre: 905-629-1873
Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP):
An ongoing monthly credit applied directly to electricity bills based on household income and size. Apply online at OESP.ca
Many students are unaware these supports exist and may delay seeking help until they are in crisis. We are sharing this information to help students stabilize their housing and utilities while continuing their education. Note, International students may be eligible regardless of citizenship or immigration status
Flexible Payment Arrangements
If you need help paying off a large or past-due balance, a payment arrangement may be an option to consider. You can make smaller payment installments along with your regular bill to pay off the remaining arrears over several months.
